comparison review: Kat von D Tattoo liner VS NYX Epic ink liner

Dear readers,

today I'm going to review and compare two eyeliners; the Kat von D Tattoo liner and the NYX cosmetics Epic ink liner.

Before I started my research: I had heard a lot of good things about the Kat von D Tattoo liner. It's one of the most discussed eyeliners, a lot of people call it a holy grill. I wanted to give it a try but I found it a bit expensive for an eyeliner and Kat von D isn't available in my country. I eventually got the Kat von D eyeliner with a new palette (that I showed in my recent haul).

I had never heard of the NYX Epic ink liner before I bought it. I thought I would give it a try since I got a gift card to spend. I also love the vivid bright liners from NYX.

Kat von D about the Tattoo liner:
'Nothin’, we mean nothin’, makes whipping out a killer Kat Eye easier than Tattoo Liner. This brush-tip liquid liner is the magic wand of makeup. Kat uses it every single day, and we really aren’t sure how we would get along without it ; )
Why, you ask? The highly pigmented, 24-hour-wear formula is waterproof and transfer-resistant. That means those lines aren’t goin’ anywhere…Insane days and sleepless nights can’t touch our Kat Eyes!
The precision brush tip is the key to super-fine lines. No less than 325 flexible bristles come together in a tight, crisp point, ready to unleash invincible lines. The supple, saturated brush glides across lids in silky, smooth strokes, making Tattoo Liner the ultimate tool for both makeup newbies and beauty pros alike.
We often marvel at how amazing it is that a teeny-tiny tip can contain so much possibility—wings, fine lines, detailwork...we could go on all day! Choose from raven-black Trooper or rich, chocolate Mad Max Brown for all your Kat Eye needs!'

My opinion:
I was a bit surprised by the lack of pigment when I first used it. Apparently you have to shake it a lot before you use the liner. After shaking the liner it works pretty good. It create perfect tiny lines. I do find it hard to create straight liner when doing my eyeliner but that's only visible up close. I probably have to practice a lot more with this liner.

NYX about the Epic ink liner:
'Live for super-sharp wing inspo? Don’t just “like” all your faves, draw ’em yourself using Epic Ink Liner. Featuring a slender and supple brush tip, this intensely pigmented, waterproof pen lets you achieve black liquid lines effortlessly. Every stroke is unbelievably fluid for a defined finish. Control the thickness of your lines by pressing down just a touch. Fine and natural, broad and bold—the look is always up to you! '

My opinion:
I was surprised by how easy this eyeliner is to use. I have been using the Sephora eyeliner for over 8 years now and I immediately replaced it with this eyeliner.

Left: NYX. Right: Kat von D.

I put the eyeliners to several tests like wearing the liner and letting a hot shower run over my face to see if it was really waterproof. And yes, they're super waterproof. They survived the eyeliner test.

                                                 Kat von D                                   NYX
Waterproof                                      yes                                        yes
Liner size                                      small                              middle to thick
Shaking before use                    yes, a lot                                 a little
Pigment                                 average to light                             dark
Price                                              $20                                         $8

Conclusion:
The eyeliners are on some fronts pretty similar but on other fronts very different, like pigmentation and thickness of the liner. I think it's mostly preference and how much money you're willing to spend on an eyeliner.
I personally love the NYX Epic ink liner more than the Kat von D Tattoo liner. I, honestly, don't understand why the Kat von D Tattoo liner is so hyped. I gave it several tries but I'm not loving it, I'm going to practice more and maybe I change my mind. However I did instantly love the NYX Epic ink liner. It's my new go-to eyeliner.

So if you ask me I wouldn't buy the Kat von D Tattoo liner but I would definitely buy the NYX Epic ink liner.
